Veronika’s Crepes

By Retna Arun

For any Francophiles who are hankering for a sweet taste of Paris, try Veronika's Pastries and Crêpes, which can be found immediately to the right of the main entrance in the Farmer’s Market. The wooden counter of their booth displays assorted wrapped baked goods. That said, my favorite option at this stand isn’t to be found on their shelves—instead, it’s inscribed above on their colorful chalk menu: their crêpes! They have various sweet, savory, and breakfast options. Personally, I like to order the sweet crêpe with nutella, strawberries and whipped cream. After ordering, we wait in the small back area of the booth. There, several black iron pans sit on the griddle, heat waving above them. Batter is spooned onto a pan, then elegantly swirled with an artful twist of the wrist. A short few minutes later, it is flipped over, revealing a completely even golden crêpe.

The nutella and fresh, thinly sliced strawberries are generously layered on  the soft crêpe and folded into a triangle. A dollop of airy whipped cream is added on top for a simple and wholly satisfying dish – chocolatey but still light. It’s a perfect treat for enjoying on the side of the dock, with feet dangling above the waters of Cayuga Lake. As you eat, don’t forget to take in the glittering blue expanse decorated with white boats and seagulls, the distant conversations of families and folk rock, the trees across the water beginning to orange, and the flying group of birds above in V formation. Absolutely peaceful, and absolutely delicious!
